Known Issues

Toilet Odours

Symptom: Smell from tank area

Possible cause: A. Bad or loose hose connections B. Unsuitable or old sanitation hose allowing odour molecules through wall C. Poor quality or split tank D. Over filled tank E. Poor pipe installation from toilet to tank. F. Breather outlet too small.

Remedy: A. Check hose connections and tighten or replace. B. Test for smell by running clean dry cloth along a section of hose and hold to nose. If an odour is present it's time to change the hoses. C. Examine tank and repair or replace. D. Empty tank and flush through several times with fresh water. A "Sweet tank" is a tank which is regularly pumped out. E. Check pipe route. Ideal system should have any necessary rise immediately behind the toilet with a steady fall down to the tank. Static waste in flexible pipework will encourage odour seepage. F. Check size of breathe outlet. Minimum breather size should be no less than 38mm (1 1/2"). As waste is being discharged from a holding tank especially by a marina pump out station, a powerful pump has the capability to implode a waste tank if the breather cannot allow a suitable volume of air in to replace the waste which is being pumped out. Also a small breather restricts the air flow inside the tank preventing oxygen from assissting the natural breakdown of waste. Either increase the breather size or install a second breather to increase the breather volume.
